The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant's fourth reactor is now saftly isolated by New Safe Confinement, covering the first sarcophagus - Shelter Object.
New Sarcophagus, Chernobyl
It was necesarry not only to liquidate the consequences of the explosion at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, but also to stop further radiation emissions. So it was desided to build the Shelter Object Sarcophagus to cover the fourth reactor.

First sarcophagus was constructed just in 206 days. But its "life" could last only for 20 or 40 years and in 2007 the construction of the new one was started. The fact is that it's impossible to demount the first sarcophagus now, because of 630 thousands cubic meters of nuclear waste buried inside.

The isolation of the reactor is not only Ukrainian problem. If the Shelter destructed, a cloud of radioactive dust could cover several European countries, so the construction of a new sarcophagus became an international project with a budget above two billion euros.

Because of the high radiation background around the old sarcophagus, the new one was built in the distance. After the construction was completed, it had been transported by rails. This process could be observed online: small people dots at the foot of a giant arch.

"Shelter-2" is taller then the Statue of Liberty in New York: 110 meters high. Its length is 165 meters and its width is 257. At the end of 2016 it was hoisted on top of the first Shelter.

The arch weighing 36.2 thousand tons would last for 70-100 years. Perhaps by this time, scientists will find out the way to get rid of the remains of uranium and radioactive waste buried under the debris of the power unit.
